What is a Striper?
Commonly known as a striper, the striped bass is a
member of the bass family, which includes white
perch and white bass. Striped bass can be caught on
a number of baits including: shad, eels, night
crawlers, leeches, large minnows and earthworms.
Naturally a saltwater fish, the striper can live
it's entire life in freshwater. Striped bass in
Beaver Lake have been introduced by the Arkansas
game and fish commission (agfc).
In winter they remain active, although going into
deeper water when the upper layers of the lake cool
below 60 degrees. This makes the striper more
challenging to catch in the winter months, but the
added difficulty only adds to the thrill of
successfully landing a great fish. The striped bass
is a beautiful fish in color and symmetry, and is
quite delicious to eat.
In the spring of the year the striped bass runs up
the rivers and into other fresh water places to
spawn - and then again late in the fall to shelter.
The fall run is the best. It can be taken, however,
nearly all the year round, and of all sizes.
Trolling for bass is an excellent sport for amateurs
and more experienced anglers alike. Big 1's
typically uses live shad on multiple lines to
improve your chances of a productive trip.
